Contact lens made up with a curved LCD display. |
Tired reading text messages from your smart
phone? Well, accessing your smart phone is now made easier!
Gent University researchers at the Centre of
Microsystems Technology have developed contact lenses that can pull up text
messages from your smart phone.
The contact lens is made up with a curved LCD
display and can show images through a wireless connection.
Though displays made into contact lenses are
not a new thing, but they are limited to only being able to display a few
pixels of information on part of the lens. But with this latest development, it
utilizes the whole lens surface.
According to the Chief researcher, Jelle De
Smet, “This is not science fiction. This will never replace the cinema screen
for films. But for specific applications it may be interesting to show images
such as road directions or projecting text messages from our smart phones
straight to our eye.”
On
top of the capability to having a mini experience of what we have on our smart
phones, these contact lenses can also act as a pair of adaptable sunglasses;
adjusting to match the sun, could be used to treat damage to the eye by
controlling the light transmitted to the retina. And instead of switching contact
lenses, they could be used to adjust people's eye color.
